New York University Politicies and Procedures
Regarding Sexual Harassment

Who is Responsible for Preventing Sexual Harassment?

It is everyone's responsibility to combat sexual harassment, but it is especially the duty of officers, deans, department heads, directors, managers, supervisors and other adminitrators to:

Ensure widespread awareness of the university's sexual harassment policy and the procedures for resolution of complaints.

Be alert for any indication of inappropriate behavior and move quickly to eliminate it.

Foster an atmosphere in which it is known that such conduct is not to be tolerated, and will be dealth with firmly.

As needed, consult the Personnel Office or the Office of Equal Opportunity for answers to questions or assistance with resolution of problems.

How Can Harassing Behavior Be Stopped?

Every member of the university community must be aware of the types of behavior that can be offensive and take prompt steps to see that it is stopped. It is especially important that any person who feels uncomfortable, embarrassed or angry about inappropriately sexualized behavior or materials should:

Tell the person responible that the behavior is unpleasant and unwelcome.

Ask for assistance from a superviso, department head or personal representative.

Contact the Personnel Department, the Faculty/Staff Assistance Program or the Office of Equal Opportunity for advice and resolution of the difficulty.

What Is The Complaint Procedure?

Many instances of sexual harassment can be resolved informally within the unit by discussing the problem with the immediate supervisor. If this does not remedy the situation, a formal complaint may be filed using the grievance procedures described in the administration, faculty or staff handbooks. Copies of these handbooks can be obtained from personnel representatives or the Office of Personnel.
